Government trade-secret laws protect cleaning-product manufacturers from having to reveal their ingredients. Scary thought? It should be. That means that any number of asthma-inducing, cancer-causing, skin-irritating chemicals can legally be used in your cleaning products and according to the government, you don't need to know about it.
What "they" use and why we don't
Ammonia - Cuts through grease. Also known to cause asthma.
Chlorine - Disinfectant. Lung and skin irritant. Lethal if ingested.
MEA - Surfectant. Causes respiratory irritation and asthma.
Glycol ethers - Dissolves soil. Causes nerve damage when absorbed by the skin. Has been linked to reduced fertility and lowered sperm counts.
APEs - Surfectants. Hormone disrupters that act like estrogen in the body.
Phthalates - Used in synthetic fragrances. Hormone disrupters linked to obesity and hypothyroidism.
Triclosan - Disinfectant used in antibacterial cleaners. May linger on cleaned surfaces, allowing resistant bacteria to grow. Also forms the probable human carcinogen chloroform when exposed to chlorinated water.
